  1. I haven't looked it up yet, but the nearest major town to Windermere is Kendal.

    The nearest city is Carlisle.

I'll have a look for you, and get back to you.

Edit - you can go from Manchester (Piccadilly) direct to Windermere, takes about 2 hours, but on some journeys you will have to change trains, either at Preston, or Oxenholme. Go to this website, and input your requirements - you'll need to choose "Piccadilly" as your Manchester station.

  2. Your problem in searching the sites is that you are entering the name of your destination incorrectly. It is spelt 'Windermere'. There is a railway station there. There are through trains from Manchester Piccadilly at 9.45, 12.45. 14.45 and 17.11. In between there are services requiring one or two changes at Preston and Oxenholme (that being the junction on the main line for the Windermere branch). Look at www.thetrainline.co.uk. You only need to enter 'Manchester' as your place of departure.

Incidentally, if you are arriving in England at Manchester Airport, you will need to get a train from there to Piccadilly station.

  3. Make sure you are spelling Windermere correctly in your searches! Not Windmere as in your question. You need to get to Oxenholme, which is the station for Kendal, and change there. Alternatively, you can get a direct train from Manchester. If all else fails get to Kendal, and get a bus to Windermere.

Incidentally, Windermere is the end of the railway line anyway so you cant miss the stop if you fall asleep after your exhausting journey!

Don't do the Carlisle route, that's the North Lakes, and you need the South Lakes.

    Have a pleasant stay.

  4. Carlisle then you can get a bus.

    Have a good time

  5. In addition to other answers...

Trains go from Manchester Piccadilly station straight through to Windermere.

But Windermere station is quite a distance from the Lake and town itself.

It's a 20 minute walk down to the main part of town....but there is a bus that connects with each train from outside a supermarket next to the railway station.

Trains from Manchester to windermere are about every 2 hours direct with a journey time of 2 hours 5 minutes.

Services where you have to change are typicaly...

    Manchester to preston,

    Preston to oxenholme(the lake district),

    oxenholme to windermere.

Journey times of 2 hours 35 minutes.

Thats one option - change times and dates etc to suit you!

  7. you need to get a bus or train from manchester to preston  or wigan and then catch the national express 570 service that is bound for whitehaven it stops at windemere. if you go to gobycoach.com you can book a seat on the bus but usually there are seats available and you can buy a ticket from the driver. the service you need is the 570 to whitehaven leaving london victoria at 11.00am make sure you get this bus as it is the only 570 that goes through the lakes the rest only go to preston area. hope this helps

  8. As per previous posts - there is a railway station at Windermere and the station is very close to the town (less than a 5 minute walk).  However, Lake Windermere will take you approximately 25-30 minutes to walk.  The village at the bottom of the hill is called Bowness.  The village called Windermere is at the top of the hill - near the station.

Best way to check train times is top use

www.nationalrail.co.uk   or www.traveline.org which will give you bus and train times as well
