I'm keen on moths and butterflies and as I've just moved to a new house I'm sorry to see how few butterflies visit the garden. Of course I shall grow things that attract them. I'm interested to see how many moths, if any, visit too.

  1. Call your county agricultural extension - they are supposed to track such things, maybe they can supply you with traps. They have special pheromones in them

  2. strip naked late one night put a light bulb on your head and count with your fingers and toes.

  3. Turn your bathroom light on and open the window wide, then shut the door. Seems to work every other time. Bloody things.

  4. Pheromones are species specific so they will not do. Usually we set up an open box that contains a light that is suspended over a large funnel that leads into a dark container. Sometimes we have the insects fall directly into a killing solution under the funnel. Otherwise you can lose them when you open the box.

  5. Moths are attracted to blacklight if weather conditions permit moth activity. In general, a temperature in the low 50's F or higher at dusk is necessary for successful sampling.

  6. plant an insectary.

they will gather there and when you are rearing brassicas (cabbage family, a moth favorite) you can grow witht the confidence that the moths will remain in the insectary rather than in your crops

  7. they like light.

  8. they seem to be  attracted to llight so that a start.
