Can anyone tell me how many hurricanes occur in a year?

i am writing this essay on hurricanes and i need to know how many hurricanes occur in a year. thanx in advance.

This varies by year and also you have to take the region into consideration.

Are you asking how many hurricanes occur total, including those that occur over the ocean and never hit land?  Are you including hurricanes outside the US? There are many in the islands that never reach the US.

I don't have answers to the questions for you but you need to be sure you frame your question properly because the answer will be different.

There's no set number. Some of the years we get a lot and some we don't. The number would probably be increasing and getting worse due to global warming. A hurricane gets its strength from warm oceans. Since it's getting hotter, the oceans get warmer which would mean more hurricanes than the path. It really just depends on the year and place of where you are to estimate the amount of hurricanes for a certain year. Some places like Hawaii rarely get hurricanes. Not every place gets struck by a hurricane.

It varies, the average for the atlantic basin is 6...the most recorded was 15, in 2005...and occasionally, there are years where no hurricanes form, the most recent being 1993.
