  1. I saw this on Braniac. You fill a bottle with water and then put an airhose in the bottle to increase the pressure. The pressurised section in the top will displace the water and provide thrust.

  2. You can buy them in the dollar stores.  They're a little bigger than a pop can (soda can if you live in the states), and come with a funnel to add water, and an air pump.  Add water.  Pump in air.  Count backwards from 10.  Release lock on pump, and blast off!  Decorate with paint, stickers, etc.

If you're more adventurous, you could try powering an inverted 2L plastic pop bottle with hydrogen:

Fill bottle with water.  Invert in pan of water.  Attach a low voltage DC power supply to pan, to separate water into hydrogen and oxygen.  When ready, ignite hydrogen.  A little more exciting than compressed air.

  3. If you are launching from a "pop bottle rocket launcher" then any two liter or 20 oz. bottle will do.  My students have made parachutes for retrieval, fancy nose cones, etc.  The best I have seen yet was designed with electrical tape.  He used blue and white (our school colors) and wrapped them horizontally around the two liter bottle.  He then taped the fins so they were blue and the nose cone was white.  For more ideas you can look on the Rockets Away web site (listed below).  You can even try out different types of nose cones and fins on their sim.

    Have fun!
