  1. Why, do you think they would genetically modify then to have less or something?

  2. I was once told that it would take 100 apples to get the same nutritional value of (1) apple grown 40 years ago.

Genetic engineering is when the genes of unrelated plants and animals are combined to produce combinations of plants, such as between viruses and vegetables or fish and strawberries. Many people believe that genetic engineering is dangerous, unpredictable, and can reduce the nutritional value of food. Quite frankly, who would think any different? Of course, many people do. Often no proper tests have been done to judge the safety of genetically altered foods, so in many cases there is no proof that they are not bad for humans.

The British Medical Association has asked for a moratorium on commercial growing of genetically engineered crops. Many countries throughout the world have banned genetic engineered crops. Regrettably, America is not one of them.

This process can hurt organic farming because pollen from these crops can blow onto neighboring farms.

  3. They have more nutrients than normal crops including vitamins/minerals.

  4. Genetic modification, as far as we know, does not reduce the vitamin/mineral content. Some GM crops, like golden rice, are even engineered to produce more of certain vitamins (in golden rice it's vitamin A).

However, because most GM crops currently are manufactured to withstand pesticide usage, they are often sprayed with more chemicals and this has been shown to reduce vitamin/mineral content. For example, crops grown without pesticides can contain up to 60% more antioxidants. The reason for this is that when a plant has to defend itself agains predation and competition, it makes more antioxidants.

  5. Almost certainly.

Some, like golden rice, are designed to have more than usual.
