Is it safe to plug an extension cord into another extension cord. I am in a room that has only two wall outlets. I have an extension cord plugged into another one and then a surge protector into that cord. Is that ok? Is my laptop still going to be protected from a surge??? What are other options I can use so I can be safe?

  1. surge protectors with long cords are the best solution

  2. The manufacturers of the cords, your safety standards group (ie. UL in the states), the fire department and possibly insurance company would all say NO to that.

Extension cords are designed to be plugged into an outlet and have the device connected directly to them, not to exceed the load they are designed for.

In practical terms you are likely not exceeding any designed loads, but people's homes have been burned down with these sorts of wiring mishaps. Extension cords get stepped on, pinched, bent and generally put through heck when they are left lying around and stretched across a wide area.

If you need more power in a given room there is no substitute for having additional outlets permanently installed. Extension cords should always be considered "temporary" in nature.

  3. It probably is not the safest but it probably be less worse if you plug the power surge into the one extension cord. Do not plug alot into the one cord too.
