  1. With your parents, grandparents, any older relatives. They can help fill you in and you might also run across someone in your family who has already started a family tree. You should have yourself, brothers and sisters. Your parents, their brothers and sisters and their families(your cousins). Your grandparents and their brothers and sisters and their families. Your greatgrandparents. At this point or sooner you may need to start your research. The Morman chuch has a lot of records available at most of their churchs and someone to help you. Also their is lots of info on the internet to help you. Also surname message boards where you can ask questions. You may even find some relatives you didn't know existed.

Rootsweb.com is a good place to start and Cyndislist.com is too. Good luck. It's a lot of work but very rewarding.

  2. follow the trail of leaves till you get hot on the trail, wrong way silly thats just a bilby who's covered in leaves mud and saw dust, but whle your here???

  3. Yes! Go to the Church of the Latter Day Saints especially the one where you were born or where your descendents immigrated. They were very nice to me. Great help and it is free. They have an online site, but I think you have to pay. Also try the government sites.

  4. www.rootsweb.com has a tutorial on its front page, and www.cyndislist.com is one of my favorite places as well.  Those were already given.

If you simply pull out your birth certificate, you have started. The operative word is to use documentation, AND to work from the present, back.  Don't try to skip back, and don't get sidetracked by searching for a surname.  Look for the individual persons and immediate family. This will help you focus on the right places, instead of any Smith in the world (which would not help anyway, regardless of the name).

There is a HUGE amount of info online.. but it can be make or break, for you to know the difference in submitted family trees, or original records.  People do make mistakes.

By using the right records, and always making sure of your facts as you go.. you know your work is good.
