  1. I like to use a music CD. Maybe where they have instruments ( like sticks) and make a slow beat to slow music and faster for faster music. The objectives are; Listening skills, music awareness and cooperation.

  2. I was going to mention "listening lotto" but Leesa gave such a good answer.

  3. Try getting some small plastic containers and putting different things in them like sand, beads, rocks, feathers, leaves etc and ask the children to shake them and describe what they hear. They will notice thet the feathers make no noise, while the rocks make a lot of noise. They will learn the sounds the objects make, what is loud what is quiet. For older children they can seperate into piles of loud or soft. There is a lot that can be done with this. Also try an animal cd. Ask them what animal they just heard and show them a picture of it, like a flashcard with a picture of the animal glued on. Then you can also go more in depth and talk about where they live and what they eat etc. Or you can do nature sounds like water, wind etc. Ask them what they hear ie: water and where they can find water ie: ocean, pond, sink, bath tub etc. Have fun and the kids will have fun too.

  4. How about "listening lotto"?  It's like bingo but children listen to sounds from a tape player and then match the sound on a picture card.

Or you could voice record children singing a song and then play it back to them and have them guess who's voice is being played back.

Activity one: Children will play "listening lotto" and discriminate environmental sounds/noises. Example, children will identify a dog barking, glass breaking, a trumpet, etc...   (you can buy listening lotto at your local teacher supply store or make your own.  It's just a bingo card with pictures of things that make noises and a tape with the corresponding sounds)

Activity two: Children will differentiate voices on a cassette tape by listening to the audio of other children's voices played back to them.
