Some Sat Navs can send you down a road that is not sutable for a caravan, so a reply from someone that has towed a a caravan using a sat nav would be very helpful.

  1. My Garmin Street Pilot allows you to select routes for car/motorcycle or for trucks.  Using the truck setting helps while towing a trailer, but doesn't guarantee perfect road conditions.  I still have ended up in some rather tight situations.

  2. The best way is to know the area you're going to, or have a look at it on a good atlas, so you can ignore the satnav when it tells you to turn into a narrow lane. Any satnav should then recalculate  the route from where you are

  3. I use DeLorrme Street Atlas 2008 Plus and an LT-20 gps... if you want a more versatile GPS they have a PN-20 out now.

That way I can use it on the atv as well as in the pickup or car.

  4. Garmin. There are umpteen models. Buy the one that suits your wallet, but I use a few in my family various models.

All of them do the same, i.e., to give you nav.

One model has lot more features than the one below. That does not mean it is any inferior. Bottom line, all the Garmin models do the same to give you directions. Hope this helps.

Another good one I hear is good, but haven't tried is TomTom

Towing a caravan has nothing to do with what make or model you buy.

  5. the one which tells you to stay off the road

  6. I tow a caravan and use a navman f20 never let me down.

eg never took me where you cant get the caravan down.

good advanced warning before you need to change lanes or turn r/l. and tells you twice say 450yds and again just before you need to manoeuvre

only small problem little slow to find Sat's on dull days.

would recommend to any one.very easy to use.

but at the end of day its your choice

  7. I believe there was a Which report on sat nav's which you may want to check out - (maybe this year?)

We haven't trailed using a sat nav, but have a large 4 x 4 , soft off-roader, which we use for our off-road hobbies of clay pigeon shooting and boating, so need a little more road room in that than in our little Nissan.

We have 3 sat nav's - the first and most expensive was a Garmin, the second from Aldi and the latest and most favoured is the Tom Tom.  We've found the last is the easiest to use, middle of the road for price, least annoying and condescending and has never let us down or led us astray, i.e. into farmer's fields or one way streets.

  8. I use the the garmin C330 and it has been very good.

  9. The key to success is to make sure the satnav has settings that let you tell it what type of vehicle you are driving and what street preferences you desire.  (I.e. you are driving a trailered vehicle or truck and you prefer main roads and highways.)  You then need to take the time to program the unit properly so you don't get sent down some side road you cannot maneuver on.

I know most of the Garmins allows for this, I cannot speak for others.  I would make sure you are purchasing from places that have a knowledgeable sales staff and ask lots of questions.
