  4. A cyclone is a hurricane and is a large-scale phenomenon. Cyclones are usually started as a low-pressure area over relatively warm waters.

A tornado is a small-scale phenomenon. Tornadoes are usually started by updrafts of the kind usually associated with thunderhead clouds. A smaller cousin of the tornado is the dust devil that is usually started by the updrafts of thermals. A thermal is warm air rising, usually from the ground.
