Can anyone tell me the key events that happended in England during 1891?

that's the year THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY by Oscar Wilde was published. I need to do this for a summer assignment and I can't find anything! If you could tell me, that'd be great :)

  1. Here's a list of things they were talking about in England in 1891. Because England was connected to the rest of the world by telegraph I'm including some of the bigger international events.

    Jan 1, An office was opened on Ellis Island, New York, to cope with the vast flood of immigrants coming into the United States. Feb 7, US Great Blizzard of 1891 began.

    Apr 1,  The London-Paris telephone connection opened.

    Mar 17, The British steamer Utopia sank off the coast of Gibraltar.

    Apr 1, Paul Gauguin (1848-1903), French painter, abandoned his wife and 5 children and left Marseille for Tahiti.

    Apr 11, A Jewish tailor's daughter (8) disappeared in Greece. A rumor spread that she was a Christian girl ritually killed by Jews.

    Apr 24, Start of Sherlock Holmes adventure "Final Problem."

    May 1, Norwood Junction railway crash occurred when a cast iron under-bridge fractured under an express train from Brighton to London in southern England.

    May 4, Sherlock Holmes, Arthur Conan Doyle’s fictional detective, "died" at Reichenbach Falls

    May 5, Carnegie Hall (then named Music Hall) had its opening night in New York City. Tchaikovsky was the guest conductor.

    May 15, Jules Massenet's opera "Griselde," premiered in Paris.

    May 15, Gerard and Anton Philips began their Philips & Co. operations in Eindhoven, Holland, with the production of light bulbs.

    Jun 11, Portugal assigned Barotseland, now in Zambia, to Britain and Nyasaland becomes a British protectorate.

    Jul 8, Warren G. Harding married Florence K. DeWolfe in Marion, Ohio. Harding called her "the Duchess." Harding had a long affair with Nan Britton, who bore him a daughter. From 1905-1920 he had an affair with Carrie Phillips. In 1998 Carl Sferrazza Anthony published "Florence Harding: The First Lady, The Jazz Age and the Death of America’s Most Scandalous President."

    Aug 24, Thomas Edison filed a patent for the motion picture camera.

    Sep 28, Herman Melville (b.1819), writer (Billy Budd, Moby d**k), died at 72.

    Oct 6, Charles Stewart Parnell (b.1846) died in Brighton, England. Irish statesman and leader of the Irish nationalists in the British House of Commons from 1880-‘90, Charles Parnell’s popularity in Ireland was so great that he was called "the uncrowned king of Ireland." Parnell formed a coalition with William Gladstone, who became prime minister and introduced a bill for Irish home rule in 1886. The bill was defeated. In 1890, as a result of a divorce scandal, Parnell was deposed as leader of the Irish nationalists.

    Oct 27, D. B. Downing, inventor, was awarded a patent for the street letter box, i.e. mailbox.

    Dec 29, Edison patented the "transmission of signals electrically" (radio)

    The magazine "The Strand" was established in London and devoted itself to popular fiction and celebrity interviews. Arthur Conan Doyle became an early contributor.

    British captain and spy H. Bower noted antelope and yak in incredible numbers in the Aru basin of Tibet.

    The Brownfields Guild Pottery Society began business in Staffordshire, England, and continued operations to 1900.

    Reached London.

    1888, November 6

    Joined Inner Temple.

    1889

    To make up for the social disadvantages of his vegetarianism, decided to become an "English gentleman" and started learning elocution, French, dancing and Western music, but soon reconsidered his decision and stopped the lessons.

    1889, September

    Called on Cardinal Manning, towards the end of month, to congratulate him on his role in the termination of the great London Dock Strike. Visited Paris Exhibition (sometime between May and October).

    1889, November

    Was introduced to Madame Blavatsky and Annie Besant; but declined to become a regular member of the Theosophical Society.

    1889, December

    Appeared for London matriculation but failed. During the year Theosophist influence led him to read much Theosophical and other religious literature including Edwin Arnold's The Song Celestial, and The Light of Asia, the Bhagavad Gita in the original and the Bible. Attended church service, and listened to famous preachers like Dr. Joseph Parker.

    Early this year, came to know the periodicals The Vegetarian Messenger of Manchester and The Vegetarian of London, and the Vegetarian Societies there. Attended International Vegetarian meeting with Josiah Oldfield. Started living simply; continued experiments in food; conducted for a while Vegetarian Club with Josiah Oldfield as president, Edwin Arnold as vice-president and himself as secretary.
