I know the Grand Canal, the canal della Guidecca and the San Marco ... I can't find a comprehensive list anywhere though. Can you tell me any others ?

  1. I couldn't find a complete list, either.  Note that there are about 150 canals, crossed by 400 bridges.

  2. (I'm amused that you think the first "Venice" I'd think of would be the one in California. Maybe I've lived overseas for too long.)

All you really need to know is the Grand Canal. That's the big "highway" there. You can grab a day pass for a vaporetto (ferry, or "water bus") and go up and down it all day long. It takes you right up to San Marco, and right under a lot of the famous bridges.

If you're curious, you can always go to http://maps.yahoo.com/ and put in "Venice, IT" to see a closeup map of Venice. I believe it'll show you the names of canals as well, if you zoom in close enough.

Also, here's a link to a list of all the major "neighborhoods" (called "sestieri") of Venice: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sestiere_(V...

If you really want to see Venice, though, get away from all the tourist traps, and start exploring where people really live. Then you'll get a feel for what Venice is really all about. The Castello sestiere is my favorite "non-tourist" part of Venice. Here's a link to information about it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castello%2C...
