Question:

Can anyone tell me what 'dramatic personae' means?

is it the list of characters at the start or is it the bit in the directors notes where it says what the characters are like?

or have i got the wrong idea altogether?

  1. Yup! You've got it. It's a list of the characters all in one place, sometimes with attributes about the characters.  Helps the reader to get some context - also helps a director (if you were looking to produce the play) to cast people and quickly know how many parts, how many males/females, etc.

  5. 'Dramatis Personae' is simply the Latin for 'the people in the play'.

    It is the list of named characters printed at the start, but can include AUTHOR'S ( or occasionally editor's ) brief descriptions  - such as 'Thisbe - lover of Pyramus', or 'Kate - the Daughter of Squire Hardcastle'.

    It hasn't got anything to do with the director of a specific production.
