  1. I'm not sure what you mean. Buildings under the canals or under the buildings below the waterline?

I know a little about how the buildings were originally erected.

First barriers were driven into the silt beds of the canals and the water was pumped out from behind the barriers.

Secondly long wooden stakes called piles were driven into the ground very close together to form a stable platform on which to erect the building. The great church on the grand canal is said to stand on over a million of these piles.

FInally once the structure is built the barriers were removed and the water allowed to return to surround the building.

    Hope this helps.

  2. No there aren't more buildings under the buildings in Venice. There may be some foundations or old flooring un new (ground) floors but certainly no buildings. Under the water you'll find a sandy goo.... Under many buildings built on the goo you'll find petrified tree trunks that used to be driven into the ground to create a solid foundation to construct buildings on.

  3. Probably members of the mafia weighed down with bricks.

  4. Hi, I'm Italian and I live in Venice, under the water there isn't building now, but here there is the problem of "high bore", that in the future could become very high and deluge the buildings, infact now they build in Venice "The Mose", a particular structure that avert water to deluge the city.

  5. No, just structural pieces holding the buildings up
