Can anyone tell me what Beagles are like as pets? My friend has one which i have looked after while he was on?

I own a beagle myself!

Pros-

Very Sweet

Loves owner

Small

Easy to care for

GREAT for small children

Cons-

Follows their noses and no one can stop them

won't stay home all of the time (they like to roam)

Howls

Pro/Con- Energetic at some times and very lazy the other!

Beagles are a dime a dozen, and most of them are bred and offered for sale by people who don't have the slightest idea of how to breed good-tempered dogs. Obedience instructors and behavioral consultants see LOTS of Beagles with neurotic behaviors, including biting, moodiness, mindless noise, and general nastiness. Beagles are not Golden Retrievers. They are independent thinkers who don't particularly care about pleasing you. Most Beagles are very stubborn and can be manipulative. You must show them, through absolute consistency, that you mean what you say.

I had one as a kid and she got into everything. She was trained well but when they get into their moods/own world there is no stopping them. Not saying ALL are like that but most are. But when she wanted to she would be very LAZY and loved to sleep. She would sleep all day and all night and she loved it. I think it really depends on the personality of the dog.

well i love my beagle.. but lemme lay some + and - for you.. okay when it comes to mine, hes Pro: Defensive, cute, affectionate. Con: sheds A LOT.., howls (which is SOOOOO ANNOYINGGGGG), he has bitten several people when hes been excited..not out of malice..just because he gets excited, competitive with the other dogs (not bad really..just can get annoying if you want to walk one, and hes hounding you to go out too)  Other Facts: keep in mind Beagles are hunting dogs. so dont be surprised to see them chasing other animals or barking..at small creatures they may sense sometimes..all in all though, hes a loving pet and a good dog.  Most beagles are from what ive noticed.. hope this helps, good luck!
