A tropic is an imaginary line of latitude, like the equator. We use two of them when we measure the earth. They basically respresent the places on the earth were the sun is directly overhead on the summer solstice. For example, if the Tropic of Cancer runs through your home, the sun will be directly overhead for you at noon on the first day of summer.

I live between the equator and the Tropic of Cancer, so the sun shines directly above us once in May, and once in July.

On the other hand, the sun is also directly overhead of the Tropic of Capricorn on the first day of summer, but it is summer in the southern hemisphere, which is close to Christmas!
