Can anyone tell me what kind of insect this is?

I was in my garden and found several black insects that resemble a ladybug. But instead these insects are fully black and have a silvery metallic looking tip on the back of them. I have never seen this type of insect before. I've looked on the internet to try and identify it, but nothing has come up. It seems harmless, but I'm not for sure.

  1. There are a number of different types of ladybird. Most people think of them as having red wing cases and black spots but surprisingly they come in quite a few variations. There are black ones with red spots-yellow ones with black spots  and also they even vary in the number of spots they have. The young larval stage is quite different-its black and longer and pointed but still runs after and eats greenfly. Hope this helps

Have never heard of one with a silver tip.
