Can anyone tell me what the "XFiles"tv show is really about?

I didn't watch it from the beginning...and whenever I try to watch it..I never understand it. Does it have a basic story line? If so..what is it? Thanks..

First the show is not only about aliens though in later episodes this was more and more of the story line. However, telepathy, mutations, thought forms, etc. have all been included on the show.

It is about two FBI agents. Mulder lost his younger sister when they were younger and he searches for and believes she was taken by aliens or our government. He investigates cases for the FBI that defy normal explanations and has the nickname "Spooky" for his efforts to help solve cases.

Scully is a medical doctor (also FBI agent) that was placed as his partner in order to debunk his work. However, while she remains more cautious of her conclusions she has come to believe in extraordinary events based on the evidence and her investigations.

The shows are about their investigations in crimes with paranormal aspects.

Edit: yes sure about his sister. I think she does have a sister but don't know that part of the story line but they do meet on at least one episode as adults.

The answer is an alien/human conspiracy.Scully's sister was murdered.The basic thread throughout the show concerns aliens and their human conspirators.Cancer man is the conspirator we know best.I watched the show from the first to last episode.I'm still pretty familiar with it,though it's been awhile.My favorite magazine even did an issue on the show(link).

Edit.Too far into fantasy, from the Sci Fi channel.Some say that about"Ghost Hunters".

The show is basically a story of two FBI agents that investigate cases impossible to explain, Fox Mulder is the one who believes in UFOs and mutants and Dana Scully is the skeptical Scientist, she was assigned to monitor Mulder's investigations in order to prove him wrong, but that didn't happen. The story  is also about a worldwide conspiracy to hide the existence of aliens.

Show does have a base line story , and its about aliens and consiparicy theory behind it all !....the show covers a wide range of paranormal activities and gives scientific explanation though they are not certifiable in anyway !

It's about the building tension between  two (male and female) govt. agents, but just when the female starts to  feel good about them getting it on, the male jumps into a sewer or some other gross substance (yuck!)

The first season or two were the best. Each episode was a stand alone show. There was no need to watch them in any kind of order.

After that the shows started becoming one long storyline and it became nessessary to see more episodes to put the story together.

I love the show and for me it's a 'twilight zone' with a reality twist--some are true, some could be true and some are just the writer's imagination. Great concept!

There is a wide conspiracy involving Mulder, Skinner, Mr. X (usually fed Mulder info) Mulder's father, Cancer man and the secret government. Scully was a skeptical partner attached to Mulder in order to watch him and report back to Skinner until strange things started happening to her and ultimately she started believing. Fox Mulder was driven by his insatiable desire to find the truth, but as usual he would be debunked by Scully and driven off the path by the agents involved with the secret government. Skinner and Cancer man usually looked out for Mulder, one on the good side, the other bad - just to keep the truth out of reach.
