I have just been told that my kitty has to be put to sleep due to having FIP. Can anyone share their experiences with this illness in regards to their cat? My kitty has gone blind and is rail thin. I am devastated. She cannot get better and may infect my other cats. I have been told that there is nothing I did wrong but I feel so guilty. She was a stray I took in about 3 years ago. She was spayed and had all of her shots so how did this happen?

  1. Please don't blame yourself for this.  There's no guaranteed prevention for FIP (there's a vaccine but it's effectiveness is questionable and it's generally not given as a standard vaccine) and your cat likely contracted the virus that causes it (corona) before you found her.  Some cats fight the virus off and others don't.

Sadly there's currently no cure for FIP.  One of my cats was tentatively diagnosed with it in 2001, and I had to have her put to sleep at age 12.  Her liver was failing and fluid was building up in her body.

I'm truly sorry this happened to you and your kitty, but it isn't your fault.

  2. Please run don't walk to the vet.  Don't let her suffer.  Few things are as horrible as FIP.  Put her out of her misery.

I had a kitten with FIP...there's no way I could watch him suffer with it.

Don't blame yourself, FIP is a virus it can come out of no where.  They are often born with it or can pick it up anywhere along the way in life.  Often having it for years before it starts to kill them.
