Can anyone tell me where Novak would need to get in the French Open in order to overtake Rafa for #2 spot ?

Novak needs to win, or at least be in the semis and hope that Nadal would lose in the early rounds.

He would no doubt have to get to the Finals, and beat Nadal to over take the # 2 ranking. Nadal has a bunch of points to defend, as he should, for most part, while Novak can earn some points by going further and beating Nadal and or Federer. You earn more as well when beating those above you. He has just 2 players to earn those extra points, along with his performance, how far he goes. I see the top 4 remaining the same after RG/FO.

Well obviously Rafas gonna win the French :P and Novak made the semis last year so he has 450 points to defend.

So if Novak was to makes the final of the French and Nadal beats him the points would look like this

Nadal: 5585

Novak:5575

but obviously if novak wins he becomes number 2 which he sooo wont! anyway lets hope Novak loses in the 3rd round or something = ]

Rafa atm is 360 points ahead of Nole. it all depends in what half Nole is.

1. if Rafa and Nole are in the same half, playing in the semis and Nole wins, then is Nole #2 (Rafa would loose 550 points while Nole wins 250 points).

2. if Rafa and Nole are in the opposite half of the draw and would encounter a final clash, Nole have to win the tournament to overtake Rafa.

momentary ....... v. Rafa ... v. Nole (v. means victory)

Rafa: 5585 ......... 5585 ...... 5285

Nole: 5225 ......... 5475 ...... 5775

3. there are many other possibilities. e.g. in case Rafa loose prior to the final and Nole reach the semis this would be sufficient to take the #2 spot.

4. a very crazy possibility. Rafa loose in R16, in this case Nole even could withdraw from the tournament to take over the #2 spot.

well.. it doesn't matter.. let's assume novak is going to overtake rafa.. then i think this will only take a while.. since he has soooo much to defend even this year.. montreal win, then final us open.. i don't think he will always be soo consistent.. but i hope that he's not going to be number 2 after roland garros...!
