  1. It might be worth popping into a library when I first became vegetarian t was really useful. With my friends (Non-veggy) they constantly offer me stuff I don't eat.

Some things to look out for are: bakeries (very often use animal fats to line baking trays etc. in most supermarkets)

Sweets and anything that needs to set: cheesecake/jelly/moose etc.

Watch for anything fried to check it's not in lard and watch out for non-veggy butters/marg.s + cheese with rennet in.

  2. You can't eat any meat, and no gelatin. It's kind of funny when someone offers me skittles or something and I'm like "I can't eat that, I'm a vegetarian." A lot of candy has gelatin in it, so just check the ingredients.

  3. It really depends on what type of vegetarian you are.  A vegan eats no animal products.  A Lacto-ovo vegetarian eats no meat (including poultry and fish) but does eat eggs and dairy products.  A lacto vegetarian eats no meat or eggs but eats dairy products.  A Ovo vegetarian eats no meat or dairy products but does eat eggs.  if you want more information on different types of vegetarians wikipedia has a very informative article about it.  Things that any vegetarian should watch out for: Gelatin.  Many people don't know it but gelatin is an animal product.  Gelatin is in marshmallows, jello, some puddings, and most gummy candies.  If the food looks jiggly it probably has gelatin in it so read the ingredients list.  Also many soups, noodles, and rices have chicken broth or stock in them.  Read the back of soup cans to make sure.  I found that progresso has many good soups (like tomato basil) without any chicken broth.  Also if you decide to do further research on the topic of vegetarianism be aware that many websites are biased and want you to believe the worst of everything.  Others want you to think that vegetarians are ridiculous and make things up to get people to stop eating meat.  So for further research try to find unbiased sites to make sure that you are getting accurate information.  I have found that websites that are written by medical proffesionals about vegetarian diets are normally very resourceful and unbiased.

  4. So many foods are off limits for us veggies!  I think PETA might have some listed.  Also, check out meetyourmeat.org. They might be informative for you.  Below is a link to a site I just found,  I still have to check it out myself, but it lists many foods veggie people can't eat.  Beware of gum.  Most gums are off limits.

Congrats on going veg!!!  Good for you.  You should feel VERY proud of yourself.  The animals thank you!

  5. Pretty much, vegetarians don't eat meat or slaughter byproducts- no red meat, poultry, seafood, gelatin, animal stock, or animal fat/lard.

ETA: Anna, mind sharing a source on that one? It's absolutely not true.

  6. umm. you just don't eat meat. All vegetarians have their preferences; some eat fish and some eat eggs. But its all really up to you.

  7. Vegetarians do not eat animals or byproducts of their slaughter.

Cows, chickens, fish, shrimp and clams are all animals.

Here is a small list of foods that vegetarians eat.

Bread, pasta, cereal, rice, beans, peas, lentil, nuts, seeds, fruits and veggies can easily offer everything that you need except B12.

All vegetarians should take a B12 supplement regularly since most people eat meat, dairy AND fortified cereals yet still have a B12 status that is lower than recommended.

  8. PETA def. has some things that you should and shouldnt eat.

Like pretzels. They are soaked in pigs pee 8x

  9. Its not hard to do a search and find out what animal products are in, especially on www.goveg.com... It is surprising how many foods in stores contain animal products, like worcestershire sauce has anchovies (eew)! Many soups are made using beef or chicken broths... It's not hard to eliminate these foods, you just have to read the ingredients on everything you put in your mouth. If you don't feel comfortable eating say, mechanically seperated beef lips, you don't have to!

  10. No True Vegetarian eats fish or any type of creature!

Animals are Animals and fish is an Animal a sea Animal

Vegetarians  don't eat animals!  If you eat fish and call yourself a vegetarian  you're a phony!  I useto be one of those phonys.   The mercury scare got me to give up fish!

Vegetarians do eat eggs, and dairy as no animal was killed to have them!   ca.360.yahoo.com/ddherbals
