Tamil Nadu is extremely well-connected by road. You just have to show up at the Coimbatore main bus stand and you will be given many options. However, chances are you will have to change buses at main cities like Thanjavur or Trichy.

Alternatively, you can go by a fast train (Jan Shatabdi Express) from Coimbatore to Thanjavur or Kumbakonam, and then a 45 minute bus ride thereafter. Here's a link to the train to Thanjavur.
