  1. Some owners bet a lot of money on there horses, others are just in it for the sport.

The biggest gambling owner I can think of is J P McManus, who is a professional gambler by trade.  He owned Istabraq, Clan Royal, Ar Muin Na Muice, Baracuda amongst many other good horses.

  2. From my experience, the biggest gambling stables tend to be large partnerships.  While no single owner is likely to bet $10,000 on one of his own horses, when you have a group like West Point or one of the other large partnership stables, you can easily have 20 partners and 4 friends of each partner bet $100 on the horse--equalling $10,000.

There are some stables whose horses I will never ever bet on.  Not because the horses are bad and have no chance of winning, but because the horses have 50-60 owners and when you consider that they're all probably betting, the odds are always horrible.  If I really like these horses, I'll bet daily doubles, pick threes, etc.

  3. Yes, these people do quite a lot of betting on their own stock & on others, but it's difficult to say who bets the most because most do it through other people so they are not taxed on the winnings.  Many owners & trainers use their winnings to pay their workers in cash & avoid paying state & federal taxes for their workers.  At least in California, that's what they do!

  4. You find diversity among owners.  Some that know nothing just bet whenever their horse runs and tells all their friends to bet too.  I on the other hand rarely bet my own.  I figure if the horse wins I will be making 5 figures, a nice payday for me.  If it doesn't win I loose the money I bet plus the money I paid to train the horse to this spot, so I loose twice.  The rush and high I get from running in the race far surpases what I might make by betting it too.  That doesn't mean I won't accept drinks from degenerates who bet my horses then feel like they own me a drink because they cashed a nice ticket on my horse, I never turn down a free drink.  Keep them coming fellas, I always love a free pint of Stella.

I will add that there are some of the guys that own horses with me bet big, they don't know what the are doing though and would probably bet the same if it had no shot, so I wouldn't read too much into it.
