It was first recorded by Billy Paul in 1972. I have never heard it done better by anyone. It was a huge hit at that time, maybe his only big hit. But to hear it done by someone else always sounds inferior to me. Great song!

The original singer was Billy Paul.  I personally prefer the Michael Bublé version, I'm actually listening to it now.
