  1. The above answers are interesting - I hadn't known that.

    I thought it would be because, when listening to your chest through a stethoscope, a doctor used to tell you to say '99'.

    (In France they tell you to say 'trente trois' -33)


  2. A pill was prescibed for British soldiers  during the Great War which was supposed to cure all ills.The pill was known as a Number 9.

  3. A laxative pill was issued in the British Army called "number 9".
