  1. Do you mean ducts for your heating and cooling? They often show up in other locations depending on your climate. They tend to put them on outside walls near windows in harsher climates to balance the loss and gain of cold and heat from the windows so the room is comfortable all over without hot and cold spots.

  2. During the winter months the walls and especially the windows get cold and cool down the air next to them. This cold air will mix with any outside air that leaks through the cracks in the windows.

Cold air is heavier than warm air, it will fall to the floor and if you are sitting there and have no heat vents to warm that air it will drop down on you and regardless of how warm the room is your house will always feel cold and drafty

  3. Most air loss happens at the windows and doors which are less insulated than walls.  The vents are placed there to combat the cold spots/ hot spots that are caused by this loss of insulation.  The air is forced through the house by the return air vents that are usually somewhere in the center of the building.

  4. The vents are aimed toward the highest source of outside heat and cold, hence the windows. Being aimed this way helps to overcome the heat coming through the glass before you would feel it.

  5. Heat travels hot to cold.Supply IB boxes and grills located there help contol the heat coming in during the summer and the all the heat from escaping during the winter months.
