my rhubarb has something eating it from the inside out. i actually thought i'd found and solved the problem as i stripped it right down and found a maggot / caterpillar munching away through one of the stalks. however, since then every stalk that grows has the same symptoms and i've even found a couple more maggots / caterpillars. i've tried looking for pests and diseases on the web but with no joy. can anyone help me get rid of this nasty creature as i've been missing my rhubarb crumbles!!

  1. The only disease I've found for rhubarb is crown rot- a fungus- you have to dig the lot up, burn it and grow a new crop in a new plot. If it wasn't for the maggots I'd say it was that. The odd thing is it sounds like carrot fly. Never heard of it attacking rhubarb though.

  2. Sounds to me like the larvae of the vine weevil. they attack a wide variety of plants. The larvae are like small, plump, white plump maggots. Two cures pick them off or use nematodes.
