A friend of mine has written this, I just wonder what it means - the only thing I know is that iwi means tribe!!

Ko Whitireia te maunga , Ko Raukawa te moana , Ko Tainui te waka , Ko Ngati Toarangatira te iwi , Ko Te Rauparaha te tangata "

  1. Hi, this is know as a Mihi, a Maori way of greeting

    My mountain is Whitireia

    My river is Raukawa

    My boat is Tainui

    My tribe/people is Ngati Toarangatira

I'm a bit stuck on the last one as the term Tangata Whenua means people of the land

So Ko Te Rauparaha te tangata means either

    My people are Te Rauparaha

    or

    My land is Te Rauparaha

A Mihi is an introduction, so their mountain is the mountain they identify with - same for the river/sea.  The waka (boat/canoe) will be the one they arrived to New Zealand on, while their iwi are the people they associate with
