Say if you were withdrawing $100 to $200 dollars and having it converted into CLP. What would the bank in the U.S. charge roughly for that single transaction?

  1. It all depends on the exchange rate. Right now I think it's something like 585 pesos to the dollar.  Therefore, $100 is roughly 58,500 Pesos.

However, when you use an ATM in Chile, you get pesos out of it (not dollars), so you don't have to go to the bank and exchange it.  It's no problem finding ATMs as long as you have a card that's widely accepted, like a Visa Check Card.  Most ATMs will give cash in 10,000 peso increments.

I was there a few years ago, but I'm assuming that everything still works the same.  The only thing my bank (Wachovia)charged me was the $2.00 fee for using a non-Wachovia ATM.  They gave me the best exchange rate for the day and deducted dollars from my account while pesos came out of the machine.  If I took out 58,500 pesos ($100.00), my account was charged $102.00.

For debit card transactions, there was no extra fee.  They just converted to pesos to dollars and deducted that amount.

I think some banks charge a foreign transaction fee, so you probably want to check with yours before you go.

I hope this helps...Enjoy your time in Chile!  It's an absolutely beautiful country and the people there are among the nicest I've ever met.  I'm jealous!
