Question:

Can anyone who is good at IQ tests help me with this?

Hi, I've recently been doing IQ tests online, more out of boredom than anything else. I recently came across this one:

http://www.highiqsociety.org/iq_tests/test.php?dataSRC=load_flash_test.php&resultsSRC=finish_flash_test.php&closeSRC=check_pass_test.php

But I cannot make head nor tails of it. There are a series of questions at the beginning involving what look like green branches laid across one another, some with squares with patterns in the middle, others with circles that have beads on them.

Can anyone explain these to me? It's driving me insane!

  1. I'm going to try and answer this question for you, but before I do, I can't resist pointing out that, for all its sleek graphics, smooth motion and sober shading, this test really is a load of bollocks. First of all, general knowledge questions should never appear on a true IQ test because they display too much bias towards cultural norms. Secondly, the maths section required knowledge of certain rudimentary formulae which, again, have no place in an objective IQ test. Anyway, I did the stupid test five times and got between 145 and 150 each time, so I suppose I'm eligible to join the 'club', but I wouldn't dream of becoming a member of such a pointless and pretentious organisation. Much better to go down the local pub!

Okay, rant over, now here's your answers:

The question with the green branches also appeared in the form of red toothpicks. The answer is that you have to count the number of joints. In other words, look at how many times the branches/toothpicks overlap one another, then try to see the pattern. For the first row it was three overlaps, then six, then nine: a simple multiplication. For the next row I seem to remember it increased by one every time. In another instance, it doubled. It's all about numbers being represented by symbols.

The question with the squares was actually very easy (I'm surprised you didn't get it). All you have to do is add the first diagram to the second in order to get the third. Simple, eh?

The question with the beads was all about motion. You have to look at each bead individually and establish how far it is moving between each diagram. In the one I saw, the blue bead was moving clockwise at a rate of two corners pre go: the red bead was moving anti-clockwise at a rate of one corner per go. It's all fairly simple once you understand the patterns.

There was another one with crosses in which you had to choose the line that was pointing in the opposite direction to the line pictured, there was another in which you had to work out how many bars were being added or taken away each time...

To be honest, if you really want to understand how these IQ tests are done, you need to read a couple of books on the subject. Here's a link that might help:

  2. If you read the page these 'green branches' appear on, it says to identify the missing pattern out of a 4 different selections.  You will also see patterns with circles, triangles, etc. as you proceed through that part of the test.  There are several of these types of tests.  Then you proceed through other tests that measure your intelligence in such areas as mathematics and language.  When you are done you will be given your cumulative score - a score of 124 is necessary for membership.  I just missed with a score of 118 doing this real quickly just so I could answer your question.

  3. I assume you can do the first question.

second one's gotta be A cause thegreen one is always top left or bottom right and it's the only one that fits.

third one is a cause it's combining everything in the last row.

4th and 5th one is easy

6th one is the last one I think (forgot which one I clicked)

anyway, each symbol exists twice per row, so you gotta count the symbols in the last row and then you know which one you gotta take

  4. What's the question? It just links to main page.
