Can anything be done for someone who has no depth perception?

Eye doctors have this chart you can look at. There is a fly that stands out, and a bunch of triangles that each have three circles in them. Supposedly, one of the circles is supposed to stand out, showing depth perception ability. I have never seen any of them stand out.

I have noticed some problems because of this. I have a hard time going down stairs because I can't tell where one step ends and how far it is to the next. Driving sucks too.

Is there anything that can be done for this?

  1. You could try putting a colored piece of tape at the edge of each of the steps and alternating the colors as you go down.

This way you would at least have a visual cue to determine where a step starts and where it ends. This would help around the home at least.

You might also consider using a cane in a manner similar to those who are blind do, which you can use to feel where the step begins and ends.

A stair lift is another option for use around your home. A stair lift will carry you up and down the stairs, so all you have to do is sit back and enjoy the ride.

  2. There's something called visual therapy that may help out your situation. It's basically exercises that will help train the eyes to move together and focus better. It's harder to help this when you're an adult but you may not know unless you try.
