After rescuing filly from auction she has had viral infection, worms, lice, found a lump which turned out to be a hernia ( she gets the op in sept when its cooler & not so many flies)

So just when i thought nothing else could go wrong i went to feed her this morning to find her eyes weeping, half shut & a grey/blue film over them, lumps all over her body!

Phoned the vet,vet came out had a look & she has taken a bad allergic reaction the the flies!.

So i need heavy duty fly repellent,in the UK,the best you can get i need to blast those little b*gg*ers!

Oh im interested in home remedies to if they work.any ideas greatly appreciated,

Thanks guys.

  1. the best home remedy i know of is vinegar and baby oil.. about half and half make a spray for it & yes dryer sheets work too.

  2. My mums an ex vet and she use to mix vinegar with some water when he couldn't get there straight away

  3. Citronella oil mixed with a carrier oil (veggie oil is good for this) and tea tree

    To make 500ml of repellent:

90ml of citronella oil, added to 10ml of tea tree oil and 400ml of carrier oil (as I said, veggie oil ca be used)

Put this in a spray bottle (about £1 from Tesco etc.) or just apply with a cloth.

Good luck with your filly, this repellent works wonders =]

Also, a fly rug would help

  4. Sorry to hear about the problems your having with her.  And, thank you for rescuing her an giving her another chance.

What ever you use, perhaps try it in a small area to make sure she is not so sensitive to it and have yet another issue.  This is a homemade remedy and  it works pretty good.

    1/2 part apple cider vinegar

1/4 Avon Skin So Soft (Original bath Oil)

    1/4 Citronella Oil

but I know many use Avon skin so Soft--the OIL and then mix like they are mad scientists..with dish detergent, with fly sprays, etc.

I've also heard of some using fabric softner which smells nice, makes the coat soft and repels mosquitos.  I've never tried it.

Oh, and one friend of mine uses Bug Blaster by Finish Line..it's cheap and guaranteed.

Do you keep a sheet on her?

Hope this helps...I hope she gets better..I'm sure in your care she'll have a quick recovery with everything  and the two of you will start enjoying life together!!

  5. You can mix vinegar with water and use that for home remedy

  6. Repel X and Tri Tech or Fly Sect is a great concentrate if mixed with Apple Cider Vinegar.  Not sure if you guys have access to AVON but the Avon's Skin So Soft is GREAT!

I also add to my fly spray recipes

    Cedarwood Oil

    Citronella Oil

    Peppermint Oil

    Lemongrass Oil

    Eucalyptus Oil

These oils (there is another but I forgot the name...) are rumored to actually burn the flies legs when they land.

Get a fly mask for sure!  Fly sheet if possible

Coat the backs of the legs with Desitin or Vaseline or SWAT to help keep flies off.

Rub the fly spray into the mane and tail dock to keep no-see-ums from burrowing in and biting.

FANS in the stall and run-in is a major help!

    poor thing..good luck!

  7. I have used Listerine with baby oil (1part Listerine to 1/2 part baby oil)and it works for a short time.  The Listerine is an antiseptic which helps with keeping bacteria down when she is bitten. My horses didn't mind it and it was a pleasant fragrance.

    Good Luck

  8. Apparently the strongest on sale is this stuff

I can't say anything about it as I've never tried it.

My home recipe seems very similar to the one Buckinfun uses

*Buckin - was the missing oil Tea Tree ?)

I have a pony with sweet itch and we are feeding him garlic and Marmite in his feeds - it seems to be helping rather a lot.

Poor little thing - hope something works for her.

  9. You can try drier sheets (like the fabric softeners). Bounce I believe works best.

We use it on our own horses to keep the flies and ticks away.

  10. You really are having a hard time with this girl Karen, you've done so well with her!

I use cider vinegar and either water or baby oil, i can't use it in a spray for my TB, cos the daft boy is scared of sprays!! I have to soak a body brush  and gently brush it into him.

I have also used fly repellent cream which i rub into his fly sheet, headcollar and fly fringe before putting them on him.

Good luck with your girl, and maybe one day we'll come up your way and get to meet her.
