I was watching tv and caught a glimpse of something on discovery the other day. A guy was saying that mountains can weaken significantly and even destroy hurricanes. is this true? does mother nature have things to cancel others out?

  1. yes and there is other type of nature than can destroy hurricanes.

    1. Lack of warm water

    2. On land (the higher the faster it weakens)

    3. High Wind shear (15 knots or more)

    4. Low Humidity

    5. Lack of a Coriolis force

  2. Yes.   Mountains and other land do tend to weaken hurricanes.  This is why many hurricanes weaken before entering the Gulf of Mexico -- they pass over Florida or other land areas which weakens them.  Although, the warm gulf water can and does strengthen them again.

  3. Normally hurricanes get weakened when(1) they enter the land,(2)move towards cold waters in the ocean and(3) when they move towards the equator and enter an area within 5 degree latitude from the equator, which is very rare(as coriolis force which gives the whirling motion to the storm is very weak near the equator).

  4. yes actually hurricanes need perfect conditions to form

wind shear will weaken and possibly destroy a hurricane

cold water will destroy a hurricane

high altitiudes will interupt wind flow destroying a hurricane

absence of water will destroy a huricane

a dry air mass can destroy a hurricane

  5. It is a widely misconstrued belief that friction from land areas will weaken a hurricane. This occurs more by coincidence.  A hurricane derives its strength from the latent heat release from massive amounts of condensation of water vapor that occurs in the showers and thunderstorms within it, and wrapping those storms around its center.  That is why they grow over the warm and humid tropical waters, where this energy source is the greatest.  They also need relatively light winds in the atmosphere in order to wrap the rain bands around its center.  A hurricane is weakened when it encounters a condition that decreases this availability of water vapor, such as moving over land areas, colder water, and/or pulling in drier air, or encounters stronger mid level winds which will tend to shear the storms to one side of the center.
