I was searching apartment by Craigslist and was asked year of employment, credit score, yearly income by the apartment manager via email before setting up show date. Is it a fraud?

  1. No, if it was a fraud you would be asked your SSN and birthdate.

I think this landlord is trying to save himself some time and pre-qualify you according to his standards.  If you don't have a job, or you've only had a job for a few months, it might indicate you are not reliable.  He doesn't want to waste his time showing an apartment to someone that doesn't qualify.  He's trying to make sure you can pay the rent.

  2. Those would seem to be valid questions once you apply to become a tenent, not before.

I'd respond back saying I'd be happy to respond to  those questions AFTER I'd seen the apartment.

I donlt think I'd want to do business with this apartment complex.  This may be an indication of them being way too intrusive.

  3. I don't think its fraud. The apartment manager probably just wants to make sure you qualify before wasting both of your guys time. Be honest about your situation.

I wouldn't give out my ssn or anything but basic info is more than okay.

If I were a landlord I'd do the same thing.

As time advancing email has become another form of communication, its just like using the phone.

  4. He has the right to ask anything he wants.  You have the right to refuse to answer.  At some point you will have to answer as many questions as it takes to get accepted as a tenant.
