where I just moved they are telling us that we can only use the cable company they have a contact with. But someone told me that it is against the law now in the state of Fl. Can someone tell me if that true & here can I find proof.

  1. Yes they can.  You are renting.  They can decide not to allow the other cable companies to install equipment on their private property.  And, I guarantee it is in your lease that you didn't read carefully before you signed it.  You're stuck until the lease expires.

  2. They cannot dictate which cable provider you use (it is illegal). Unless, the apartment is providing free cable for you (which some do as an incentive), then you do have to use the company they have a contract with.

The apartment can put a restriction on if you have a satellite dish or not. As long as you do not go against their policy on that, you can use any company you choose.

In Orlando, there is not much to choose from besides Brighthouse for cable.
