Can astigmatism be corrected with glasses?

Question

i have had two exams within the year. basically my right eye is shot due to a condition that was hereditary (sorry, i cant remember what it was called atm) and it can never be corrected.

well at my second exam which was 4 days ago, i found out i have a astigmatism in my left eye. i got a prescription for both glasses and contacts, and i've worn contacts before and they are not for me so i got my prescription for glasses filled yesterday.

basically my question is will my left eye be corrected with glasses? i'm just wondering because its my only good eye

astigmatism cannot be "corrected" in the sense of not have astigmatism any longer without surgery.  With glasses, you'll probably be able to see more sharply than with contacts because with glasses on, you can look left, right, up, down, and your field of vision will still be corrected by your glasses.  it's a common misconception that glasses can "fix" astigmatism but it's not true but they do help to correct it and help you see your clearest while wearing them. continue seeing your eye doctor annually to ensure the health of your eyes remain as best as possible! =)

yes!  I have astigmatism and glasses suit me well much better than contact lenses.

people with astigmatism usually have less rounded eyeballs and depending on their shapes normal contact lenses tend to be uncomfortable; customized contacts may address this issue but they are more expensive.

Glasses can help pull the eye back in so you are looking straight but only for a little while! I find If I am tired or my hayfever is there my left eye will just wander off. Like it has a mind of its own! Wear your glasses most of the time and you should be fine! For a more permenent solution there is the surgery option! They will make it more clearer the eye has less strain on it and hence doesnt have to work as hard!

Yes.

Astigmatism is only a particular version of short or long sight, and is optically corrected in exactly the same way,

i.e."corrected" as long as the glasses are being worn, not made to go away!

There is nothing difficult or odd about an astigmatic Rx, and in fact almost every eye has a degree of astigmatism  if you measure accurately enough, but most won't be worth turning into an astigmatic Rx.

The expectation that a normal spectacle Rx has just one number is in fact the more unrealistic one.

It's not an "irregular" cornea as it's so often described.  In fact there is a condition of "irregular astigmatism" to cover those much rarer instances where it is! (there, glasses do not work well, but hard contacts may...)

not corrected permenantley per say, but there are corrective lenses that soothe eyes with astigmatism and are shaped differently than ur average set of contacts.

Glasses will correct your astigmatism while you are wearing them but once you take them off you will still have astigmatism. I had lasik surgery to correct my vision and astigmatism.

Well to explain first an astigmatism is where the concavity of the eye differs from what is to be normally. As defined by Wikipedia "Astigmatism is an optical defect, whereby vision is blurred due to the inability of the optics of the eye to focus a point object into a sharp focused image on the retina. This may be due to an irregular or toric curvature of the cornea or lens. There are two types of astigmatism, regular and irregular. Irregular astigmatism is often caused by a corneal scar or scattering in the crystalline lens and cannot be corrected by standard spectacle lenses. Irregular astigmatism of the cornea can be corrected by contact lenses. Regular astigmatism arising from either the cornea or crystalline lens can be corrected by a toric lens."
