  1. no they ar not the same . you can run the bikes wit automobile oil and it is cheeper but as the Transmission is the heart f the bike its not worth damaging anything for the sake of spending a few more bucks on good quality bike oil.the damage and repairs would be costly.motor cycle oils ar far better and safer as they ar made for bikes

  2. NO the ANSWER IS NO.

guardrail you are only partially true..All your examples are TRUE 100%

Except that he is asking if he can run AUTOMOBILE MOTOR OIL in his 2 stoke trans.

THE oils are not the same, AND they are not even MEASURED the same, as in weight rating.

A 80 wt Transmission fluid IS NOT the same as 80 wt gear oil. blah blah, this part is way to long for Yahoo.

The important part is that AUTO MOTOR OIL does NOT have the ADDITIVE for the clutch in it.

MOTORCYCLE 4 stoke engine oil and Motorcycle TRANS oil BOTH have the correct additive for clutches.

that said I know some guys that Race every weekend on AUTO MOTOR OIL in thier bikes. just cause it is cheaper.

I don't know what kind of ISSUES they may have, like clutch wear.

I do know that I have never had to put a clutch in ANY of my bikes, (as an emergency or at track). ANd I have never worn a clutch past half way when they go in on schedule.

We race Cross country 100 miles a weekend 14 times a year.

    I use only MOTORCYCLE OILS.

For your 2 stoke  like Guardrail says you can and should use EITHER MOTORCYCLE 4 stoke oil OR MOTORCYCLE trans. oil like the HONDA Racing 80 wt.

If I just had to use something off the shelf at an AUTO PARTS house, like an extreme emergancy, I would use DEXTON TRANS FLUID, as it does have the correct additives for the clutch AND it is the proper viscosity (virtually same as the HONDA OIL)

  3. 10w-40 4 stroke motor oil is recommend to use in the crankcase of 2 stroke engines.

Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

A 4 stroke motorcycle uses 4 stroke motor oil in the crankcase.

A 2 stroke engine doesn't have any different components in the crankcase, as a 4 stroke engine.

They both have the "exact" same components.

A transmission and a wet clutch.

A 2 stroke engine's crankshaft, cylinder, piston & rings are seperate from the crankcase and they are lubricated by the oil in the gasoline pre-mix.

Automobile transmission oil and motor oil are different chemicals and are not to be interchanged.

"2 stroke transmission oil" is a marketing ploy by manufaturers of such products, guilting you into using their product.
