Question:

Can being in pain worsen depression?

I had major (abdominal & female,) surgery 4 weeks ago and so far there hasn't been ONE day that I can truthfully say has been good or that I haven't been in some type of pain.

I spoke to my therapist and she said this is usually par for the course. I still have 3 weeks go to until I have to go back to work. I'm very weak and can't do too much of anything and tire very easily. Any suggestions on how I can avoid a major set back? I'm bi-polar and I faithfully take my medication daily.

  1. Sure it can.  It can also work the other way around.

I would do the things you love - really love so you can feel better each

day mentally.  I know this sounds silly, but try repeating some mantras to yourself every morning - "I have good, uplifting experiences each day" or "My body is healed".

Also, try to do some GENTLE exercise - any little thing once or twice a day.

    Luck to you.

  2. Are you taking your pain medication,as prescribed?I cant give alot of advice for the bi-polar disorder since Im not bi-polar but know that your not alone(my sister is bi-polar and struggles everyday).

  3. i know how you feel i am a chronic pain sufferer and my mom always tell me try to think positive i know its hard but there is always someone worse of then you good luck hope this helps

  4. Of course it can!

You've been through a lot, you're tired. your still in shock.  Why would you not be depressed?

Having said that, look for something positive to entertain you.  It's good your keeping on top of the BiPolar thing as your friends and family can be more supportive if you are not biting their heads off ;]
