Question:

Can blue aquarium lights cause rapid algae growth?

I installed blue aquarium lights Thursday night & today I noticed a thin film (maybe algae???) on the inside walls of the aquarium. I cleaned it right of with an aquarium/tank scrubby & it looks back to normal. Can the blue aquarium lights cause rapid algae growth or was the film always there (just not visible thru the BRIGHT white aquarium lights) I have NEVER noticed any film on the walls of the tank & I look at my tank so many times a day it is borderline fish stalking :) I have a 10 gallon glass tank w/ back filter. It is always clean (I keep up w/ it) & all the nitrite, nitrate, pH, amonia, alkalinity, water hardness...ect... are all at the correct levels. This just happened or became visible at least since Thursday when I put in those blue lights... which I love by the way. They seem so soft compared to the bright white light that come with the hood. Kind of like a bight fast food resturant vs a dimly lite resturant you know? Anyone with knowledge on this subject I really will appreciate your input. Thanks!!!

  1. Mine are half blue and half white. There wasnt that much algae. Blue lights are really for marine tanks.

Remember to turn on the lights for a certain amount of hours. Don't put the tank near sun light.
