  1. Yeah they can, but Bose speakers don't have a good enough dynamic range especially in the mid-range to be considered good speakers. Not many people know this as Bose is very good with their marketing strategies. They overprice and overhype their products.....not just my opinion either, visit any forum dedicated to home theater and there won't be too many people if any that like Bose.

  2. I agree with gh - dont buy bose unless you are buying for appearances only!

No they will not neccasarily work with any system - check the ohm rating of the speakers you want to buy compared to the specifications of your amplifier

  3. The previous problems expressed about Bose are gripes based on speaker placement.  I've been a Recording Studio Engineer since 1966. Those people have no concept of the Bose principal. The room has everything to do with the sound. You can't simply place a Bose flat against a wall because their system actually has a "back-splash" principal employed that uses any surface to enhance the sound. The wall or any surface behind the speakers is actually part of the speakers and as such must be placed a distance away from the barrier.  We considered using early Bose technology speakers when we built Full Compass Recording Studio back in the early 70's but rejected it because of speaker placement. It wouldn't work in our control room design.

Can you hook them up to any system? Of course you can! However the speaker placement is extra critical because you have to consider the room.

  4. It depends on which speakers you are talking about. The Stand alone speakers except for the 901s hook up like any other speaker. The 901s require either a seperate amp or a Tape 2 monitor so you can connect the 901s EQ. The Accoustimass systems connect to any 5.1 receiver but the speaker wires and sub cable goes to the Bass module before going on to the speakers so homes that are pre-wired require a pre-wire adaptor. The speakers that go with the Lifestyle systems can physically be connected to a standard receiver but wouldn't sound right because of the EQ built into the bass module for those couln't be used.

I noticed you didn't ask about sound quality but since everybody is chiming in.... Bose hasen't changed their sound for years and so have fallen behind other brands in sound quality but the average consumers ear will still like it, unless you like deep bass which Bose lacks. They fool the ear by having plenty of mid bass but low bass is missing. when doing an A-B comparison with similarly priced speakers Bose always sounds hollow.
