  1. you can keep them together if they are used to each other . if you buy them from 2 different places you should introduce them slowly and see how it goes . other wise it should be fine but keep an extra cage so if there is fighting you can seperate them.:)

  2. From my own experience, I believe it depends on the pigs' overall personality, gender, and cage size.

I had two female guinea pigs, and they fought constantly at night.  It could be a combination of their being female, and the size of their cage (as it was rather small).  However, I've seen two guinea pigs of the same gender get along just fine, no matter what size the cage was.  This is why I think personality plays a big part as well.

The tough part is that you really won't know until you do some observing.  You may ask the person who you are buying them from about their behavior in one cage (if possible), or you could test it out for yourself.  If they don't get along, you may consider keeping them seperated or getting a bigger cage.  Guinea pigs are social creatures, but like two people on a deserted island, they can get tired of one another quickly.

Like I say, you should be fine with both of them as long as you get them while they're still young.  Just make absolutely sure that you observe their behavior, and make adjustments accordingly.

  3. Unfortunatly, once they mature, they will most likely rip each other apart because they want their territory. Sorry! You will want seperate them some how..

  4. When I got my first two guinea pigs (both males) we kept them in the same cage at first. When it was apparent they didn't want any part of each other, we bought a second cage and separated them. You'll just have to see how your guinea pigs react to each other. Good luck!

  5. If they have been brought up together from a young age, two males usually get on very well. Obviously, with any animal there is a chance that when they reach sexual maturity they may fight, but if that happens you can either put them in separate cages next to each other so they can still hear, see and smell each other without getting stressed out.

If you don't want to seperate them, and they do fight, talk to your vet about neutering them both. It is a high risk procedure for guinea pigs but it will get rid of all their s*x hormones.

  6. Contrary to popular belief male guinea pigs CAN live happily together!

Piggies are a social species and need the company of their own kind - they should not be housed alone.

The most common reason for them not getting on is not enough space - boys are a bit more territorial than girls so it is really important to make sure you have a big enough cage. The piggies need to be able to get away from eachother if they want to. For 2 boys your cage should be at least 10.5 sq feet of floor space - a 2x4 c+c cage would be best (they are really easy to make and cheaper than stoer bought cages).

If you get 2 boys at the same time (i.e. brothers, or those already living together) the chance of them fighting is very slim.

It is also possible to introduce unfamiliar males, although this is a bit more complicated.

    Just in case.....

It is possible that as your new piggies mature, they will squabble a bit to establish dominance. They may squeek, chase, mount eachother, nose-butt and rumblestrutt. This is all completely NORMAL!

You should leave them to get on with it - once they have established who is boss they will settle down. You ONLY need to separate them if they draw blood.

    Hope this helps!

  7. It is a myth that males will always fight.

  8. I think they wouldn't like sharing a space with another male. My brothers had guinea pigs and we didn't know not to put them together tghe first time we got them but now that we know they've all passed away after years of happy life and love.

But you can always try, each guinea pig is different I guess and if they're together from a young age maybe they'll get used to growing up with another male? Who knows.

    LoL Goodluck~!
