Well cause my brakes have been really squeaky and it sounded like it was metal to metal...But my dad checked them without taking anything off but the tire and said they were ok, and that it is just dust. What do you think?

  1. If the slide pins and calipers are working properly the inside and out side pad should wear comperable. Metal to metal will not be a squeal,,, but a grinding. Squealing brakes are caused by excessive brake dust,,,or a tattle tail when the pad is worn out.An inside pad wearing more than an out side pad indecates the caliper isn't releasing properly. This can also cause excessive brake dust.Good luck

  2. yes they can, ususlly the inside pad will wear out faster than the outside pad will and on some sides some of them can wear out a lot faster the the other side will, this is common with disc brakes though,i see them all the time with one side still good and the other side almost worn out, this can be caused by a sticking caliper or dirt in the lines causing the caliper not to fully release on it,good luck.

  3. Brake pads can wear unevenly but you can stay on top of it and prevent any uneven wear. The secret is being absolutely sure the slider pins that the caliper self centers on are clean and well greased with *synthetic brake grease. If you ever detect a small amount of uneven wear, simply reverse the pads from the inside of the caliper to the outside.

When doing a brake job it pays to carefully inspect the slider pins for any scuff marks, corrosion or rust. If you ever need new slider pins be careful where you buy them as auto-parts store brake parts increasingly are comming from off-shore suppliers and they aren't as hard and tough as OEM ( origional equipment manufactures) pins. The auto-parts store pins can be easily inspected as they are light silver in color and the metal is soft. OEM pins are dark colored close grained steel and they've been hardened.

Noisy brake pads mean a couple of things #1. They most likely are metallic or semi-metallic and they are grinding the rotors to an early death. Creamic pads are cleaner and quieter. #2. You can quiet your pads down by removing them from the caliper and spraying them down with brake cleaner. Coat the steel side with *CRC Brake Quiet. Let the high temperature red/orange silicone dry for 20 minutes and re-assemble. The Brake Quiet dampens the pad harmonics and noise.

  4. yes all brake pads will wear unevenly.the inner pad will be thinner than the outside.if worn uneven from top to bottom you have stuck slide pin, common problem.

  5. Uneven wear of brake pads is always possible?

  7. Yes!

They normally do to a small degree.
