I'm 33 years old and I'm marrying my American girlfriend. This of course will give me dual citizenship. Can I apply like everybody else or do I have to wait a while or are there any other prerequisite?

  1. Your nationality has nothing to do with it.  You do have to be an American citizen.  Congratulations on your marriage and good luck with NYPD!  :)

  2. I'm a NYPD Sergeant and was a Police academy instructor I have been with the department for 15 yrs. You are nearing the max age of 35 so you need to hurry. You can take the entry level exam like everyone else, you will be rank according to your score. You will then be called to start you background investigation after that is completed. You will need to complete the NYPD academy, currently is a 6 month academy. NYPD does not recognize prior police experience, everyone needs to go throw the same process.  The process from the time you take the exam to the time you enter the academy could take from 6 to 12 months.  If you have any questions or to request an application call (212) RECRUIT.

  3. You do not need to be a citizen to apply, but you must be a citizen by your date of hire.
