Question:

Can busted motor mounts lead to transmission problems?

My Mazda 626 started out just making one single pop when I put it in drive. The noise came from the front left part of the car. I took it in and they told me I just had a busted motor mount. Well, I continued to drive it without repair. And the popping sound kept increasing. Two pops then three. Before long it was popping like crazy until 3rd gear, when it would quit. Now the noise was coming from the front center of the car. So I took it in again and they said two motor mounts were busted. Had them repaired only to discover that the noise was coming from the transmission. So, what are your theories as to what happened? Did driving with busted motor mounts s***w up my transmission or are the two problems not related? Was the noise coming from my transmission all along or could the initial popping sound on the front left be just the motor mount? I'm trying to understand exactly what happened. Any help would be great!

  1. short answer , Yes. motor mounts are there to keep the engine aligned properly with the rest of the drivetrain as well as hold the engine in place, with the engine putting extra stress on the transmission it would fail early. You should have replaced the first or at least strapped it down temporarily with a chain.

  2. Sounds like you may have damaged the cv joints. they will take a lot of abuse but do not tolerate excessive vibration such as failed mounts.

  3. your car is front wheel drive  and has a host of problems can occur from broken motor mounts. you have a trans axle rather than a regular trans. whats the difference? a rear drive car has a drive shaft that will allow some shifting by the trans etc but you have very limmited play available with the trans axle.

  4. Broken motor mount normally would not cause internal transmission problems. However it basically puts cv joints and half shafts out of alignment. This can cause undue stress and wear on drive line components. It cound have caused a failure such as broken housing, bearing failure or even **** linkage problems which could cause transmission damage. If Ihad to guess I would say that the two problems are related.

  5. Since motor mounts hold the engine & trans from droping out> Yes it can cause many issues & damage>

  6. Usually motor and trans mounts cause drive axles to separate and break, but there is always a possibility that the excessive movement caused some type of failure in the differential portion of the transaxle.

  7. yes it can and it will mess up your drive train as well and not to mention the engine will ware down the rings and push rods from heavy vibration

a busted transmission mount will do the same but a busted motor mount will mess up all of the above

  8. yes it can! if the motor mounts gets broke, it can put a strain on the transmission.
