  1. Keep them as far away from your duct work as possible. The sound will travel through it horribly into other rooms. Not only that if it is close enough it will cause your duct work to vibrate and ring inside your walls. Do not under any circumstances put your speakers inside the duct work for the same reason mentioned. Other reason will be heat/cold, along with pressure in your duct while air is blowing, will not allow the speaker to vibrate properly. If you must put them near duct work. Use enclosed ceiling speakers. This will help. Other ideas: Added insulation around the speaker or even a speaker box built up inside the ceiling if possible. If it is a finished room the box will most likely not be an option unless you are, or know someone who is, handy with drywall. Dry wall is not real difficult but it is very dusty. If the area is exposed to loose blown in insulation then you must build an enclosure or use enclosed speakers. Some speakers will have screens on them. This is not enough to keep the fine dust out of your speakers.

My best recommendation for an area near duct work is to use an enclosed ceiling speaker. But keep in mind these are usually t2-3 times taller than a normal in ceiling speaker.
