Question:

Can charity be a bad thing?

The American system of welfare is supposed to help people that are in need. However, many people abuse the system, and they find no reason to try to make their situation better because it's already pretty good. I know several people on food stamps that spend that money on very expensive items, like $18 steaks and things like that that I can't afford even as a hard working citizen who's earnings help pay for that guys steak. I also see people that earn benefits with four or five kids already, pregnant again because each child brings more money. I wish I could opt out of having my tax dollars sent to this program, because when my husband lost his job and we were desparate to make ends meet, we were told he didn't qualify for any benefits. What are your opinions?

  1. i feel the system is pretty good about helping others, but it should only go towards help for ones that are in actual need for it. i personally know of some ppl that abuse the system as well they have kids just to make more money for themselves they barely tend to their kids and keep them clean or anything like that just so ppl will feel sorry for them also they make their kids ACT MENTAL to get a "CRAZY CHECK" thats what they call it its for mental problems i am not sure the actual name for the check and all but they will tell each kid to act like they have issues like this so they each kid gets a check every month! this woman has like 6 kids! ppl like this dont deserve help its awful.

I personally feel i have worked since i was in the 11th grade and now i am 32 yrs old and if i have to stop working because of injury or illness or something bad i hope i get help from this system we have that i have paid taxes on all these yrs as well, but we can only hope that ppl will try to help themselves 1st.

  2. The welfare system is way out of control and I think it should be done away with.I get tired of driving by the forty-ounce apartments seeing them waiting on their checks instead of looking for a job.

I had this same thing happen about 4 years ago.I was working 2 jobs, my husband worked full time and we had no food.We did not live above our means in any way.All we asked for was food stamps. We were told we make too much money.Once I had to go to the grocery store with $10 and figure out how to feed 3 people for a week. All we ever ate was spaghetti for dinner.Mean while, welfare mama behind me in line had a cart full of cereal, soda, chips and junk on her food stamps.

Since we have to keep the welfare system to coddle the ones who don't want to work then there should be REAL guidelines for them to follow.

1.set a limit on how much time they can be on assistance.

2.another child should not get more money (not let them get off assistance for one month and reapply with new child.

Yes, this is one subject that pisses me off. I had my daughter when I was 17.I NEVER had assistance.I worked 10-12 hours a day, six days a week and paid for daycare.

Now they can get money, food, car payments paid, utilities cheaper. The biggest p**s me off is they are ENTITLED to get an allowance for entertainment. That is some thing that every one should have to work for.

I was once told by a woman "knowing how to work the system and filling out the papers is my job".

I'm sure that it won't be a popular view but honestly, do you really want to pay for some ones cushy life style while you work your butt off ??

Have you ever looked at your utility bill taxes ?They make you pay more taxes to pay the low income people bill so they can pay less.

  3. I know there are abusers of the welfare system. There are people who abuse their positions at work as well.

There are also many good, decent people on welfare who really need the help and aren't abusing the system.

You are perpetuating the stereotype that people on welfare are "Lazy" "don't want to work" and have kids just to get more money.

I think in reality it's nowhere near that simple. Nor do I  think you can generalize to all, from the few you know. This used to be called "making too much stew from one oyster".  :)

Please remember that everyone is different, that most who are on welfare don't abuse it, and that it helps many other people who really need it.

  4. It is a very good system

but as every other system made by man

    NO ONE enforces its guidelines

Mostly because the people actually working for the system

are over worked under payed and and have to many cases to deal with on thier own . Many just get pushed through and or overlooked . And thier is always some who will abuse it and lie and cover up . Cant cover everyone everyday in everyplace....thus so many fall through the cracks and so many others sweep it under the rug .

  5. I don't think charity is ever bad if it is helping someone who asks for help.

It can be bad if it is badly managed, not achieving the goals of the charity, or used to influence people (the way that some churches give charity).

However, what you are really asking is if the American welfare system is a bad things. I agree with the others who says it can do and it can do bad depending on how it is used.

I am sorry that you do not qualify when you need help. Perhaps some other type of organization could help you.

I wish that I could opt out having my tax dollars sent to pay for the war in Iraq.
