  1. Yes its possible, but probably hard to do.  Can be very dangerous if you know how to do it.

  2. Sure it allows you and inside control with locks and strikes possible , it is very effective with distracting blocks while open and nerve strikes when closed. If it is steel or other hard material can also break bones.

  3. Many Chinese styles have a broad sword and other long range weapons like staffs and spears that can counter a sword attack from fighters of other styles.

  4. Hi.

    Certainly.

The Chinese martial arts fan was originally designed as a concealable weapon, but more of a 'hidden in plain sight' sort of thing.  Fans were common at the time and someone, somewhere at sometime in history decided to make a fan out of metal and sharpen the tips to turn it from an air moving device into a multitasker; an air moving devise/weapon.

It was used primarily as a defensive or as an assassin’s weapon; usually the defensive aspect was applied against assassins ironically enough.

The fan certainly wouldn't have been the first choice against a sword or spear but if you’re walking through the park cooling yourself with a fan and someone jumps out and tries to kill you at least you'd have something to defend yourself with.

So yes, it could go against long weapons but really was only designed to give you a defensive tool.  Modern day equivalents might be pepper spray or a taiser, not meant to go against a gun but at least you'd have something...

I'm sure if you delved deep into fan fighting you would probably find ancient techniques against all different weapons, swords and other long weapons included.

    I hope this helps :)
