  1. They can be used in a pinch, but if you are going any distance at all, they will hurt your feet a lot.    Not to mention its not safe as your feet will always be searching for stability.

There are clipless pedals w/cages that are designed to be used with either cycling shoes or tennies.   You can clip in while doing serious riding, but still hop on your bike for a spin to work with normal shoes.

  2. Yes, but the longer you ride the less comfortable it will be.

  3. It depends how you mean the question.

The cleats won't fit on normal shoes (there are no s***w mounting points).

You can use rubber soled shoes (they will not slide off as easiliy as leather soles) but they would only be good for short rides.

There are combination pedals with an SPD type clip on one side and a flat platform pedal on the other. Those are the best bet when you will sometimes wear street shoes and other times clipless bike shoes.

  4. Yes, but you give up safety because of the smallish non-flat platform.

And when I try it, it hurts my feet because the pedal pokes into the sole of my shoe.

And it depends how far you want to ride.  Down to the corner store?  No problem.  Longer?  Get out your riding shoes.

You might consider SPD or Crank Brothers pedals.  Then you can buy shoes that are okay for both walking and riding; there are even sandals.

  5. yes, but eventually it will be uncomfortable. I recommend this from Nashbar. It clips on the pedal and becomes a platform.
