Can cmos detect an external cd drive?

I'd like to reformat my computer then install windows XP, but my internal cd drive is broken, so i was wondering if i can use an usb external cd drive as a boot device on cmos then insert the cd and install an OS?

  1. plug it in ,restart your comp and check bios to see if it shows as a boot device option


  2. Depends on the computer.  Some won't recognize the USB port early enough to boot from it.  You need to go into your CMOS and see if it is available or read your motherboard manual.

  3. In most cases - yes. Just be sure to set your boot order properly.
