Question:

Can component cables carry 1080p signals?

I was wondering whether or not component cables can carry a 1080p video signal or not. For the most part, I've heard YES's but I want to clarify some other doubts I had. I heard that the component cables you have need to be a certain quality to be able to do it. Are the Xbox 360's good enough to carry the signal? I bought a Premium console on December 19, 2006 and still have the original component cables. Ever since I got my Sharp Aquos, which fully supports 1080p through component, I've been able to select 1080p from the Xbox dashboard settings and it looks amazing and haven't experienced any problems. BUT my PS3 fanboy friend says that component just can't carry 1080p signal and it's just being upscaled. Could I get some clarification about this and the matter of the quality of the component cables on the 360. Thanks for your help!

  1. Your friend is right. It is being unconverted to 1080p. It is still perfectly good 1080p though. Tell him that all PS3 games also have to be unconverted to 1080p and see what he says. To answer your main question, yes.

  2. Component cables can carry 1080p, but it just depends on whether or not your tv supports 1080p through component.

  3. yes, 360 cables are designed to carry 1080p

Your PS3 friend is just mad because 1080p was one advantage that the PS3 had at launch that was quickly fixed by microsoft, so he can't say "i have 1080p and you don't" anymore
